The modern woman is a recurring subject in Helene Schjerfbeck’s paintings from the 1920s and 1930s. Schjerfbeck’s letters reveal her keen interest in clothing and fashion. At the same time, her correspondence and paintings depicting Parisian women of the nineteenth century reveal her ambivalent attitude toward modern fashion.
Lotta Nylund, PhD, is Curator at the Villa Gyllenberg Museum and one of the curators of the exhibition Schjerfbeck & Fashion.
The lecture will be delivered in Finnish.
